WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The West Carrollton community rallied around a family who suffering an unimaginable heartbreak, the loss of a child.

Gracie Purdum died from brain cancer Sunday.  She was just 7-years-old.

Her passing prompted community members to lace up their shoes and walk in her honor on Monday.

More than one hundred people participated in the walk that started at the Kroger in West Carrollton and ended in front of Gracie's home about a mile and a half away.

Walkers wore purple because it was Gracie's favorite color.

"You don't have to know somebody to care," said Brent Dane, who led the walk carrying a large wooden cross.  "God gives you a love for people, especially kids and when they die it hurts."

When walkers arrived, Gracie's family was standing in the front yard holding photographs that captured the 7-year-olds bright smile.

Many children greeted Gracie's mother and father with a hug.  Most had a special connection with Gracie, like 7-year-old Ryan who was her classmate and teammate in soccer.

"She was a nice friend and I know what happened and I'm sad," said Ryan.

Gracie's teacher was also in the crowd.  She admitted Gracie is who ultimately taught her the lesson during their time together.

"I've learned about love, strength and courage not only from Gracie but from her Mom,her Dad and her brothers as well," said Sheila Sanders.  "I can't imagine going through what the family has."

Uncontrollable tears fell as Gracie's mother addressed the crowd.  She talked about how she held her daughter during the last hours of the little girl's life.  She also thanked everyone for their support.

Community members released purple balloons into the sky and sang 'Amazing Grace' to conclude the ceremony.

There will be another opportunity to show support for Gracie and her family at the West Carrollton High School football game this Friday night.  The Pirates will take on the Sidney Yellow Jackets.  Kickoff is set for 7:30.  Everyone is asked to wear purple in Gracie's honor.
