Caught on "Coyote" camera

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - If the "No Trespassing" signs don't deter you., the giant barbed wire-topped fence will, but some have still found a way to make it onto the runways here at the Dayton International Airport.

"They don't call them the wily coyote for nothing," says Aviation Director Terry Slaybaugh.

Coyotes are finding ways through the fences at the airport. The worry is that they could interfere with planes trying to take off or land.

"It can cause big problems especially with smaller aircraft," Slaybaugh says.

So the airport is turning to Persistent Surveillance Systems for a solution.

They're the same company that is in talks to provide aerial surveillance for the Dayton Police Department.

In this case the camera will be attached to a tower, but still give officials a good look.

"What's unique about this technology is that it has a pretty broad viewing area unlike a lot of our cameras which tend to be fixed on one location," Slaybaugh says.

City commissioners approved $20,000 Wednesday for the camera. The hope is it will show airport officials how the coyotes are slipping through security.

"That's one animal we're very interested in and be able to develop some background on what their habits are and patterns are and be able to keep them out," Slaybaugh says.
