Bistro Serves Up a Second Chance

MIAMISBURG, Ohio (WDTN) - It is Random Acts of Kindness Week, as designated by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. To kick things off here at home, we're visiting a Miamisburg restaurant that serves up more than just a good meal.

At One Bistro the sign says it all: Our Neighbors Eat. It is a philosophy that's their specialty.

"We probably have four, to 16 or 20 people a day who work for their food," said Robert Adamson, director and executive chef.

One Bistro is a pay-what-you-can-afford restaurant, and if you can't afford anything, you can volunteer your time for a meal. Although, some people just volunteer for the cause. Adamson started the faith-based project a year ago.

"It's amazing," he said. "I get to come in here and build relationships with people and give back to my community."

"Well, I didn't know exactly what I was walking into," said Darrell Stewart, Jr. "I didn't have money one Wednesday. So, I came down and I came through the door and... "

"I said, 'Hey brother, how are you?'" said Adamson. "He said, 'I'm sick and I need to talk to somebody.'"

"I had a drug addiction for 43 years," Stewart said.

"Immediately I knew we had a connection and I could truly help him," said Adamson.

He did help him. Stewart began volunteering, attending classes for his addictions, and working at a repair shop. That was nine months ago.

Stewart said it has been tough, but he is doing great, "I have 7 months clean."

The menu may bring you in, but at One Bistro, hunger is only the first of the needs that are fed here.

"There is hope here," said Stewart. "There are people who will love you to no end and they'll always be there."
