Attention shoppers: Store now hiring

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) - Jimmie Aleshire has a resume you wouldn't believe.

He's worked at GM, made fishing lures and taken photographs, but no matter what he's doing, he likes to sing to keep his spirits up.

He even sang a few lines of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" for us.

He hopes to be singing a happy tune when it comes time for Kroger to hire.

The store held a career fair Friday to fill 300 positions in its new store off Austin Boulevard.

"Since it's a people oriented business, we're passionate about service," says James Avant with Kroger. "We look for people with great smiles, who have great personalities."

You could find a lobby full of personalities at the Wyndham Hotel where the career fair was held.

Hundreds showed up, each with their own story, like Shaquilla Watts, who is looking for a job to support her 1-year-old son DeAndre.

"It'd help me out because I would have money in my pocket and for my child," Watts says.

But what all the job seekers had in common was a desire for a good job in a time when they're scarce.

"It's getting hard," says Patricia Stapleton, who is among those looking for a job.

As many built up their resumes, workers continued building up the new Kroger expected to open in January.

This is the first time the company has held a public career fair like this one to fill jobs at a new store.

"We're finding out this is a great way to go," Avant says. "We've got a great pool of people. There's a lot of talented folks here in the area."

Jimmie is one of them.

He can remember making $3.50 an hour at his first job.

A lot has changed since then, but not his singing or his desire to work.

" I like to stay busy," Jimmie says. "It's my personality. I've got to have something taking up my time."

The job fair will continue at the Wydham in Miamisburg from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
