DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - For the first time next year, third graders must pass a reading test or they'll be held back.
The Dayton Public Schools want to make sure parents fully understand the new requirement.
The district held its first informational meeting Wednesday evening at Fairview PreK-8.
Officials say there are numerous resources available at school and for parents at home to make sure every child is reading proficiently.
"The law is quite specific that third graders should be reading proficiently and I truly believe that. However, we need parents to understand how we accomplish this working together," said Lori Ward, Superintendent.
Three more parent information meetings have been scheduled. The next one is set for Thursday at Louise Troy Elementary.
Two more sessions will be held next week at Wright Brothers and Cleveland schools.
The meetings each begin at 6:00 pm.
