2 nurses sentenced in connection to teen's death

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Two nurses convicted in connection to the death of Makalya Norman have been sentenced.

Mary Kilby, 64, of Miamisburg, and Kathryn Williams, 43, of Englewood, were each sentenced Oct. 24 to five years of probation and 100 hours of community service but not in any care giving capacity.

"What happened to Makayla should never happen to any child anywhere," says Montgomery County Asst. Prosecutor Tracey Ballard Tangeman, who says she wanted the two to get prison time.

The home care nurses were found guilty of failing to properly care for Norman, who was 14-years-old when she died in March 2012. She suffered from cerebral palsy and mental illness, and weighed only 28 pounds at the time of her death.

Both women have already forfeited their nursing license.

Makayla's mother, Angela Norman, was sentenced to nine years in prison in the case.

A third nurse, Mollie Parsons, will stand trial Nov. 5th.

Dr. Margaret Edwards, along with Kilby and Williams, faces a misdemeanor charge in Montgomery County Juvenile Court for failing to report child abuse.
