PIQUA, Ohio (WDTN) - A Piqua, Ohio woman was mauled by a pair of pit bulls while riding her bicycle Sunday evening.

The dogs pulled the woman, Sandra Getzendiner, 58, from her bike, witnesses said. One dog grabbed the woman's face while the other bit her abdomen.

A number of witnesses tried to drive the dogs off, but as one described, "none of us were armed," so they were unable to get close enough stop the attack.

The dogs finally let go of the victim and ran to a wooded area along the Great Miami River.

Piqua officers and Miami Co. Sheriff's deputies search for the dogs. The Piqua Fire Department was called to provide an infrared camera to help locate the animals in the woods.

One dog was spotted and attacked a Piqua officer who shot and wounded the animal. It ran back into the woods and disappeared. Just as the search was about to be called due to darkness, the second dog ran across a trail and was shot and killed by officers.

Getzendiner was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. Her condition has not been released.

Officers said they are familiar with the pair of animals and believe they know the owners.

The incident remains under investigation.
