TROY, Ohio (WDTN) - It was business as usual on Monday at the Miami County Courthouse in Troy where early voters were casting their ballots.
Voter Philip Stivers said the process "ran real smooth," but behind the scenes it's a different story.
On Friday, the Miami County Elections Director of more than 10 years, Steve Quillen, unexpectedly resigned. He cited the stress of the upcoming Presidential Election.
"It can be stressful," said Roger Luring, the Chairman of the Miami County Board of Elections. He told 2 NEWS they have had some problems with absentee ballots going out and believes those issues may have contributed to Quillen's decision.
"Unnecessarily, we got hundreds and hundreds of calls last week about it," said Luring. "We think we've solved that problem, but that's what adds to the stress".
With one issue under control another now needs to be addressed. The Miami County Republican Party must find a replacement for Quillen.
Luring, a Democrat, said he is confident a qualified temporary director will be selected soon. In the meantime, he wanted voters to know that everything is under control.
"I'm sure today the people that walked up, if they didn't see the paper on the weekend, saw no difference in delivery of service," added Luring.
Joan Stivers voted on Monday and she agreed, noting she saw no problems at the polls. "Everybody does their job, they're fully trained," said Stivers. "Nobody is irreplaceable. I found that in my own job. I wasn't irreplaceable, so you know he is not either. People just have to go on and do their job and make sure it is done well. I have confidence in that".
