LAKEVIEW, Ohio (WDTN) - Troopers with Ohio State Patrol are investigating after a school bus carrying 41 elementary students overturned in Logan County.

Bus 18 was transporting students home from Indian Lake Elementary School on Township Route 88 when the driver lost control and ran off the road around 4 Monday afternoon.

"She apparently lost control, slid off the road and the bus turned on its side," said Captain Dan Lay, who is District 5 commander with OSP.

Lay said its unclear how the 35-year-old driver lost control, but said the bus was traveling south when it went off the side of the road.

The impact shattered the windshield as well as a window near where the children sit.

"I was petrified about the children," said  Don Deweese, who rushed to the scene of the accident after learning what had happened.  "I also drive for the district."

All 41 children, plus the driver, were taken to Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine to be checked out.  Hospital officials and investigators said most of the children injured had minor cuts and bruises, but one student did suffer a broken bone.

"We had to use the emergency exit and go out the back door," said Nancy and Toni Scott, crash victims.

Nancy and Toni Scott, age 9 and 7, were sharing a seat when the bus overturned.  The Scott sisters were not hurt in the accident, but said it was a frightening experience.  Their mother, Marcia McCombs, felt the same way after a friend told her what had happened.

"We had no confirmation if they were okay or  the severity of the cases," said McCombs.  "All we knew is they were transferred to the hospital."

Investigators said another bus came to the scene of the accident and transported the children and driver to the hospital.

"As soon as I saw my girls I just grabbed them, cried and told them I loved them," said McCombs.

Troopers cited  the bus driver  for failure to control.  The accident remains under investigation.
