XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) - Apartment residents in Xenia were evacuated from the complex on Deer Creek Drive early Tuesday morning.
The flames were first spotted on the balcony of a third floor apartment, and then quickly spread to the attic. A large hole was left in the building's roof.
The State Fire Marshal was called in to investigate. The cause was later determined to be the result of an improperly discarded smoking material.
Damage is estimated to be $300,000 to the apartment building and $100,000 in contents.
Three emergency responders suffered minor injuries. Multiple medics were called to the scene, but no residents were hurt. It appeared all animal occupants made it out safely as well.
The building has 12 units. At least one family will be receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
