FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) - Stray cats are taking over some neighborhoods in Fairborn, according to residents there who said the number of felines is out of control.
Many people believe the reason is in part due to the closure of the Fairborn Animal Shelter in December 2010 due to budget cuts.
Della Cox showed 2 News the half-dozen stray cats that have made her Fairborn backyard their home.
Cats were found lying under the trees, in the grass and in barrels, as well as walking around the home and even bathing in the road.
"I don't care much for their odor," said Cox. "You constantly smell it in the air."
Connie Habel, who lives the next block over on Morris Drive agreed the cats are out of control.
"The strays keep using my garden as a litter box," said Habel. "I've found placing coffee ground in the garden keeps them away. Apparently they do not like the smell."
City officials told 2 News they were not ready to comment on the matter when this story aired on Wednesday.
Fairborn Daily Herald reported city officials have made plans to look at working their local shelter back into the 2013 budget.
