FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) - Construction crews removing a vacant set of railroad tracks in Fairborn should be wrapped up by Thursday evening, said City Engineer Jim Sawyer.
There are 2 sets of train tracks at Central and Kauffman in Fairborn, but one set hasn't been used in nearly 30 years. The dual set of tracks is actually slowing down traffic because by law, all school buses must make a complete stop at each set of tracks.
The bus drivers turned to the city of Fairborn for help. The removal project is being paid for by the railroad company Norfolk Southern. In exchange, the city of fairborn simply had to put up the detour signs.
While drivers are all in favor of the project, bike riders voiced some concern about the bike path.
"i want to make sure it stays connected because when they did the other crossing up here, they did the roadway but they took out the sidewalk," said Woody Ensor, a bike sentinel with Greene County Parks.
2 News took those concerns to Fairborn officials who said the section of the bikeway that's being removed along with the tracks *will* be replaced.
