Mother leaves newborn at Beavercreek police station

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) - Greene County Children Services is taking care of a newborn that was left at the Beavercreek Police Department.

The baby boy was left just before 7:00 pm Monday night.

It appears the parent legally left the child, who was less than a day old, in the care of authorities under the Safe Haven law.

The Beavercreek official who received the newborn immediately took the boy to Soin Medical Center to be examined.  The boy was unharmed and in good health.

Greene County Children's Services and Juvenile court officials are involved.  Officials will ultimately work to place the child with a loving family.  A process they said could take months.

Magistrate Cynthia Thompson with Greene County Juvenile Court would not speak to this specific case, but did in a general sense.  Thompson stressed the parent did the right thing, and should not be judged.

"We really don't know the circumstances of that parent and the stress they may have been under," said Thompson.  "What we do know is the safety of the child is of upmost importance.  The child being in the care of a police officer verses being in the care of someone who could potentially harm them is better. "
