Going the distance: amputee runs race

FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) - Chris Trobough is a Captain in the United States Air Force who has two young daughters. Two years ago, his life changed forever.

"I was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2010 and I went through chemotherapy, went through some treatment, that didn't work. So, we decided to do the amputation and that was March 21st of last year," says Cpt. Trobough.

But, he always had a positive attitude.

"It was a very tough time for him but we were just impressed with how he came through that and wanted to continue on with his life and get fit with a prosthetic and we came in to help him with that," explains owner of Optimus Prosthetics, John Brandt.

Since that time, Cpt. Trobough has been training for the Air Force 5K on Wright State's Campus. He says it was his daughters who motivated him throughout the race.

"It was great. I was thinking of them throughout the whole race. So, I couldn't wait to cross the finish line and see my daughters cheering me on and smiling" comments Cpt. Trobough.

He crossed that finish line for the first time as an amputee Friday night with a tearful hug from his wife to receive his well-deserved medal.

"We had a good fight and we beat cancer, It's a good finish," says Cpt. Trobough.
