XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) - More than just flowers are growing in a garden at a housing complex in Xenia. Controversy has taken root as well.

Residents of the Greene Metropolitan Housing protested the closing of Lawson Gardens Friday.

According to GMHA, the gardens have spread to unacceptable areas and are interfering with keeping up affordable housing standards which could mean fewer government dollars heading their way.

The residents were given 30 days to remove any produce from the land.

"A lot of these tenants have lived here for 15 years or more and have beautiful gardens that extend outside that newly prescribed area and we just think it's unfair the way they're operating. They haven't listened to any of the tenants complaints. Well, they listened but, they haven't responded in any other way," said Vickie Hennessy, resident.

GMHA has plans to till a community garden behind the Community Center in 2013.
