Fire dept. gets oxygen masks for pets

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) - The Xenia Veterinary Associates Animal Hospital, and the Ohio Veterinarian Association donated pet oxygen masks to the Xenia Fire Department.

Captain Jason Kinely said the new equipment was needed.  "A lot of times at a house fire we encounter pets that have been overcome by smoke," Captain Kinely said.

Captain Kinley said they had to use human oxygen masks prior to the new equipment, which didn't fit well.  "The nice thing with the pet mask is it will actually fit over their snout and you'll be able to deliver high levels of oxygen directly," Captain Kinely said.

Veterinarian Brett Ellis hand delivered the masks and hopes he can do the same for other emergency agencies in Greene County.   "Of course pets are now apart of the family so if there's something that can be done on the front line to increase their survival, then by all means we should be able to get that out to our fireman," Dr. Ellis said.

The Xenia Fire Department received three pet oxygen masks.  The masks cost $70 a piece.
