Firefighters battled a massive blaze at a Sugarcreek Township apartment complex that left several families homeless.
Nine fire departments were called to The Bayberry Cove Apartment Complex around noon on Friday.
It only took minutes for them to knock out the major fire, but they stuck around to make sure no hot spots flared up.
Firefighter say the blaze sparked early Friday afternoon.
Smoke filled the air as six to eight apartments went up in flames.
A resident of the complex saw the smoke and tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher before it got out of control.
Douglas Baily Jr. said, "So there was a fire dude right next to me. I believe he was a fire dude. So, I gave him the fire extinguisher to let him finish and tried to run to go get another fire extinguisher, cause that one was almost gone."
Officials believe the fire was caused by a man on living on the first floor who wasn't paying attention while he was cooking.
He and his neighbors were able to make it out of the building safely.
The Red Cross has been called to help families who've lost everything.
Apartment managers are working to put some families in empty apartments.
