Moms practices the positions their sons played

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Carroll High School's football moms were feeling the heat on Friday night.

Right in the middle of a heat advisory, they got a taste of the grueling workouts their sons have to endure every day.

The football moms got a chance to go through an entire football practice, and play the position their sons played on the field.

From the skill of an offensive lineman, to holding a ball like a true running back, passing it like a quarterback, and tackling it like a defender, the workouts had the moms sweating in just minutes.

"It's just a smidgen of what their sons do obviously," said high school football coach Steve Bartlett."

The water bottles were close by, but the moms were warned not to drink until the coach gave them a water break.

"Well it's a little hot for that, but I follow the rules," said Terry McCombs, the mother of a freshman who played offensive tackle on team.

When it was time for a water break, the moms were warned, there was no walking allowed on the field. They were told to jog to the water stations. They did so enthusiastically.

At every practice, coaches said they kept a close eye on the players, who were sweating and sweltering under the sun. In temperatures like these, one missing water break could end in a serious problem.

"We're always making sure these guys are getting water every 10-15 minutes. Make sure you drink some kind of ade. Gatorade, poweraid, lemonade, something," said Bartlett.

They especially kept an eye on the over achievers who pushed hard on the field.

"The kids that won't stop if you shoot them with an arrow," said Bartlett.

For moms like Danyel Wiesman, it was an eye-opening workout.

"I just hope he gets lots of water," said Wiesman, who's son played running back on the team.

Practice was scheduled to start in less than two weeks.
