DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Dayton is making it easier to pass its exam for police recruits as part of an agreement with the Department of Justice aimed at increasing the number of black officers in the Ohio city.

The Dayton Daily News reports Thursday that the city Civil Service Board says the change means 748 people passed the most recent exam, increasing the number by 258. The newspaper says the racial makeup of those who passed was not available.

The city and Justice Department in 2009 settled a suit that had accused Dayton of discriminating against blacks in its hiring of police officers and firefighters. As part of the agreement, the city was to develop new selection procedures.

The city has said it plans to hire both police and firefighters by 2012 to replace retirees.
