SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - An elderly Clark County man is the latest person in Ohio to die after being diagnosed with the West Nile virus.
The Clark County Combined Health District confirmed Oct. 1, the 84-year-old had been hospitalized and died due to complications from viral encephalitis with the probable cause being West Nile virus said Health Commissioner Charles Patterson.
Patterson said there are currently eight probable cases of the West Vile virus in Clark County and cautioned residents to remain vigilant and take all reasonable precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites.
West Nile virus is a viral disease affecting the central nervous system that can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. It is important to note that most people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will never become sick. Everyone, however, should be aware of the symptoms of WNV. Symptoms may develop 2-15 days after someone is bitten by an infected mosquito.
