Springfield Guard Base's new mission

Fighter wing now flying RPA's

Springfield, Ohio (WDTN) - At one time it was the home for the 178th Fighter Wing. Although it retains that name, it's mission has changed.

They may not support active fighter jets taking off and landing anymore, that doesn't mean they're not flying.

Now the Springfield Air National Guard Base's primary mission is flying RPA's or remotely piloted aircraft half a world away.

The base is one of just a hand full of bases in the US to have such a mission that, 24/7, tracks our enemies every move with MQ-1 Predators.

From the base located just south of Springfield they're partnered with Wright-Patt's National Air and Space Intelligence Center, or NASIC that provides reconnaissance, intelligence, medical and communications support for our troops world-wide.

Wing Commander, Colonel Greg Schnulo says the health and vitality of the base has never been better.
