SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Once upon a time two very important men brought a very important message to a group of kids at the Creative World of Learning in Springfield.
"It's a great story and a positive story," says Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
One of the men worked in the capital city and his job was to make the rules.
The other man's job was to make sure everybody followed those rules.
Both were representing the group Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.
To help them with their message they brought with them someone special, a dog mascot known as the Safety Pup.
The three of them were great friends and they shared their message with two very important books.
One was about a duck who ran for President. The other was about an officer and the dog that helped him.
The kids really liked the books, but the books are just the beginning.
The three friends want the students to read lots of books.
"This is so important we can invest in every innovative idea we can think of to emphasize the importance of kids being able to read by the time they reach third grade," says 10th District State Senator Chris Widener.
Because the three friends want the kids to have their own good stories to tell one day.
"It's pay me now or pay me later and the investment now in our children will save millions of dollars in the future," Kelly says.
So if they can reach the kids now, the two very important men won't have to punish as many people for breaking the rules in the future and everybody will live happily ever after.
