Oil found after 3 days of drilling

CLARK COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) - Crews have struck oil in Clark County. The discovery came late last week at a farm off Detrick-Jordan Road in Pike Township.

The sample was pulled deep from under Bob Suver's soy bean field. "They found oil within 50 feet of where the projected it to be," said Suver.

Suver leased a small section of his land to Michigan-based West Bay Exploration after the company determined his property to be a prime location for oil.

Traditional drilling, not fracking, started on Tuesday and on Thursday crews struck oil at 1700 feet.

"Just being a part of what's going on in Ohio, moving to more of an energy state, I think it has great potential," added Suver. "I'm not saying this is going to be part of that, but it can be something that's going on".

Suver told 2 NEWS that West Bay is still trying to determine if there is enough oil to move forward with a production well. "We're optimistic and hopeful," he added.

Clark County Commissioner John Detrick is also excited. He said he views the oil well as a potential gold mine for his community.

"This already happening in Eastern Ohio and if it happened here, crews would be working here, staying here, eating here, and it will just be a plus for the local economy," said Detrick.
