Motorcycle fatalities increase across Ohio

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Law enforcement hopes a new partnership will save the lives of our motorcyclists.

Nearly all counties in our area have had one motorcycle-related fatal accident so far this year.

Darke County has two deaths, Montgomery County has four and Clark County has five. For Clark, that's as many deaths as 2010 and 2011 combined.

Authorities announced a partnership between law enforcement agencies and Mid-Ohio Harley Davidson to raise awareness.

"We need to not only think for ourselves as riders, but we have to think for the people in the four wheeled vehicles as well," said Brian Cubbage.

Officials say it's especially important to be aware of motorcyclists this weekend. The Harleys and Hot Rods event will be held in downtown Springfield Saturday.

It's important that other drivers respect motorcycle rights:

- A motorcycle is considered a motor vehicle with all of the privileges of any vehicle on the roadway.

- Drivers should give motorcyclists a full lane of travel.

- Look for motorcyclists, especially when changing lanes on the highway.

- Do not follow a motorcycle too closely.
