SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - A six hour standoff ends peacefully in Springfield.

The Springfield Special Operations team walked the suspect out of a home in the 1500 block of South Centre Boulevard around 10:30 Sunday evening.

Police say the suspect, Lawrence "Luke" Franzheim threatened an 8-year-old boy, who was riding his bike, with a shovel and hammer. Police say Franzheim, who is in his 60s, also yelled racial slurs at the child.  The victim's mother tells 2 News that when she confronted him, he also threatened her with a hammer.

When police arrived, they say he was inside the home and wouldn't come out or respond.  After a six hour standoff, the Special Operations Team forced its way into the home and brought Franzheim out without any further incident.  Police say he is mentally unstable.

They tell 2 News that he was also involved in a standoff with police back in 2001.

Franzheim faces charges of ethnic intimidation.

The victim's mother says she's thankful no one was hurt and she's glad he's behind bars.
