MOOREFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - Authorities say a participant in a triathlon at an Ohio reservoir drowned during the swimming segment of the event.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office says a male participant had trouble during the event Sunday at a reservoir outside of Springfield, about 40 miles west of Columbus.  He was pulled from the water and taken to a nearby beach, where paramedics tried unsuccessfully to save him.

He was identified as Clark County resident Charles Cribbs Sr. His age was not released.

The sheriff's office says Cribbs' relatives were on scene at the event and reported that he had met with a doctor and discussed the race beforehand.

The county coroner's office ruled the cause of death was drowning.
