SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - 2News has learned more about the local victim of the Colorado movie theater shooting.

Matt McQuinn, 27, attended church at Maiden Lane Church in Springfield before moving to Colorado last November.  Its where friends and family will soon say their final goodbyes.

Those who worshiped alongside Matt every Sunday said his kind nature stretched far beyond the church doors.

The church released a statement that read in part:

"In many circumstances, Matt was one to often remain calm and help those around him.  His care and concern for others was apparent and he strived to be a better man."

Bob Burns lives three houses down from the mother and step-father of Matt.

"I never dreamed that it would be our neighbors who would have to go through this," said Burns.

Bob said he didn't know Matt or his family, but, like the rest of the country, has heard much about him and his last moments that are now labeling Matt a hero.

"He did the right thing," said Burns, as a tear fell from his eye.  "He did what I would have done."

Matt was fatally shot while using his body as human shield to protect his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, during the attack.

"He died a hero," said Burns.  "Its really sad."

Visitation for Matt McQuinn will be held Friday, July 27 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm and again from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the Maiden Lane Church in Springfield.

His funeral is planned for Saturday morning, July 28 at 10:00 am at the church located on Maiden Lane.

A fund has been established through the church to help offset funeral costs.

You can make your donation by putting the victim's name, Matt McQuinn, on the memo line.
