Locals protest Social Security service cuts

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Cuts to social security service personnel and hours has employees fearful they will no longer be able to operate.

Local Social Security workers protested along with employees across the country to oppose cuts they said will punish thousands of Americans.

Workers in Springfield said recent proposals from Congress would slash the Social Security Administration's budget by millions.

Twenty-four employees serve the 240,000 Social Security beneficiaries throughout the greater Dayton area.  A major reduction in staffing and hours has made this responsibility challenging, according to Rick Hanna, who is with the union that represents all Social Security offices in Ohio. 

"If there is the cut that Congress is asking about it could result in anywhere between 15 and 40 days of furlough for most government or most Social Security employees."
