SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Firefighters with the Springfield Fire Department said staying warm in freezing temperatures is challenging at times.  Firefighter Matt Porteus said special layered heat resistant jackets help them fight the elements.

"Several layers. Three layers. It has an outside waterproof layer. There's another water membrane, and this is a quilted layer." said Porteus.

Lieutenant Dave Aills has been with the Springfield Fire Department for 26 years.  He said keeping equipment in working order can be a challenge too.

"Lines will bust.  We'll have things that just won't work right," said Aills.

Porteus tells me they must drain their hoses and pumps before heading to each call to prevent them from freezing.

"We will make sure we lubricate everything we have to turn.  Caps and stuff like that that will keep them dry.  That will keep them from freezing,"

It's a lot of steps they said are necessary to keeping them warm you safe.
