SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - John Parker, 27, was swimming with friends Tuesday afternoon at Buck Creek State Park, when investigators say he went under the water. Friends pulled him out and tried to save him by performing CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary reports show a medical condition may have contributed to his death, according to investigators.

Bonnie Skinner is the mother of John's 2-year-old son. She says John suffered from epilepsy.

"I was just in shock. I was shocked that he would even attempt to go near water, being an epileptic. I would be scared for my life. I was shocked his friend was just close enough but couldn't get to him in time," says Skinner.

And John's death has hit her hard.

"It is very difficult. I've known John for almost six years now. We have a 2 and a half year old together. We communicated. He absolutely loved life. He loved his family. He just loved everybody," explains Skinner.

John's family wants to hold a memorial service for him but they need the community's help.

"His mother is disabled. He was disabled. I'm a single-mother. There's no money at all to pay for any kind of funeral arrangement, or viewing or anything. It would be fantastic if anyone could help with anything. Every little bit would help," comments Skinner.

Loved ones plan to set up a fund Wednesday at 5/3 Bank for John's funeral expenses.
