CLARK CO., Ohio (WDTN) - The Clark County Combined Health District will continue cooling center operations.

The heat index is expected to be over 100 degrees each day through July 7th. Additionally, the overnight low will not reach below 70 degree. This will significantly place individuals at an increased risk for heat-related illnesses if they do not use necessary precautions.

The Health District continues to ask everyone to check on family, friends and neighbors, especially those at high risk for heat-related illness such as the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions. Many times they do not realize they are in danger.

Cooling stations will continue to be provided as respite from the heat and humidity. The following businesses and governmental entities have agreed to open their doors for this purpose:

  • Meijer’s on Hillcrest Avenue
  • Super Wal-Mart on Bechtle Avenue and Tuttle Crossing
  • Upper Valley Mall
  • Clark County Public Library: Main Branch, Houston Branch- South Charleston, Enon Branch
  • Southern Village Shopping Center
  • Park Shopping Center – Bechtle
  • Bethel Twp. Fire Station #51- 3333 Lake Rd. Medway

The Health District would like to stress that everyone needs to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Individuals are also encouraged to minimize long periods of exposure to high heat conditions.

The Health District has put together a list of tips to help you stay safe in the heat:

  • Wear loose, lightweight and light-colored cotton clothing.
  • Eat light meals.
  • Cool down with showers, baths or recreational swimming.
  • Do not leave children and pets unattended in closed vehicles.
  • Water is the best choice. Alcoholic beverages are not recommended, since drinking them may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  • Physical activity should be limited as much as possible. Minimize long periods of time in the heat.
  • Individuals with chronic health problems, such as heart disease or lung problems, should minimize activities because the heat will add additional stress.
