SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - The man Springfield police said ran over and killed a 12-year-old girl is being held in the Clark County Jail on a $110,000 bond.

Joseph Lewis Thomson Sr., 30, is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to comply.

He's accused of striking Kayla Mongold as she was walking with a friend near Murray Street and Chestnut Avenue in Springfield. The friend was not injured.

Police said Thomson had been clocked on radar for speeding and was attempting to elude the officer trying to stop his SUV when Mongold was struck.

Investigators said the officer was not engaged in a chase, but was following Thomson in his direction.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave, but is not accused of any wrong-doing.
