SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Bond was set at $1 million for the man police said killed another with a fork.
Laune Paul Dozier Jr., 19, of Springfield, was arraigned July 18, 2012, accused of stabbing Jason Wones in the chest with a 2-prong serving fork during an altercation that occurred the day before. Wones was pronounced dead at the hospital later that day.
The stabbing happened inside the house at 338 Lincoln Park Circle in Springfield.
Meeka Fultz, who lives across the street, awoke just before 7 a.m and saw police outside. "They had it roped off, nobody was allowed in or out," explains Fultz. "It is close to home, real close to home," comments Fultz.
Police said Wones saw Dozier punching a woman in the face and tried to stop him. That's when Dozier grabbed the serving fork, stabbed Wones, killing him and left the home.
"Homicide detectives responded directly to the scene as did crime scene. They began interviewing witnesses, developing suspect information pretty quick," says Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody.
Police said they tried to serve an murder arrest warrant on Dozier around noon Tuesday at the duplex at 732 East Street, but he did not come out. After obtaining a search warrant, members of the Springfield Special Operations Team fired tear gas into the home, went inside and found Dozier hiding upstairs under a pile of clothes. He was taken into custody around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Dozier was arraigned on an aggravated robbery charge in connection with a July 13 robbery at a Springfield Kroger, where police said he robbed a woman as she left the store.
Neighbors are thankful he's off the streets. "I'm happy they caught him. That's what he gets. He deserves it, Fultz said. "You don't take another man's life. That's like, you took your own life. I hope he knows that. There's no coming back from that."
