SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Vonda Ferguson tried to kill herself after she was convicted on 32 counts of child abuse on Friday, Nov. 20, deputies said.
Deputies said, as the guilty verdicts were being read, she swallowed a bunch of sleeping pills.

Deputies realized she had the pills in her mouth while she was in the holding cell at the court house.
"We swept as many as we could out of her mouth and called a medic." Said Sgt. Phil Sanders from the Clark County Sheriffs Office.

Ferguson left the courthouse in an ambulance and was taken to a local hospital. She is expected to be okay.

Vonda Ferguson was found guilty of beating her five adopted children with belts, bats and hammers, until they bled. Prosecutors said she raped two of them with a toilet plunger.

Ferguson's defense attorney said the children were disturbed and had troubled backgrounds and lied about the way their mother treated them. The jury deliberated for about 6 hours, and came back with the complete 32 count guilty verdict.

"We're very pleased. The children have waited a long time for justice. And today justice has been rendered for them." Said Union County Prosecutor David Phillips.

Vonda is facing over 60 years in prison. Her husband, James Ferguson is already in prison serving a 65 year sentence for the same charges.
