SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - Clark County was celebrating a 200 percent drop in the number of fatal crashes this year. The news came as deputies stepped up patrols for the holiday weekend.
To date in 2009, officials said there had been seven fatal accidents in Clark County. Last year they saw 24. The top three deadliest interesections in Clark County were State Route 235 and US 40, SR 235 and Gerlaugh Road, and SR 72 and Villa Road.
Officials attributed the drop to an aggressive crack down against speeding, drunk driving, and an increase in the the use of seat belts.
A new report, just released on Tuesday showed seat belt usage in Southwest Ohio is ranked among the highest in the state. Sheriff Gene Kelly attributed that to education and enforcement.
"We've been utlizing grant dollars at Safety Village for children as young as 5 years old and teaching them to wear your seat belt," said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
Other dangerous intersections in Clark County are as follows: Spangler and Lower Valley Pike, Union and Spangler Road, Ballantine Pike and SR 41, Bird Road and US 40, SR 41 and Titus road, Lake and Gerlaugh Road, and Tuttle Road and US 40.
Sheriff's officials encourage you to contact authorities if you happen to see an erratic or reckless driver on the road.
