Next of Kin Registry still a priority for local mother

CHAMPAIGN CO., Ohio (WDTN) - Carmela Wiant still remembers the day she got the call saying her son, David Money, was killed in a car accident in Columbus, Ohio.

"It was raining really really hard.  It happened in Columbus.  He was coming home from work and he hydroplaned," said Wiant.

Wiant did not find out about her son's accident until hours after he was dead.

"The police did not know how to get a hold of me.  They had called his work place," said Wiant.

Wiant said she does not want anyone to go through that same situation.  With help from former Governor Ted Strickland, the Next of Kin Registry was introduced.

"The law passed a year from the day I called.  Now we are able to put two emergency contacts in our drivers license," said Wiant.

Wiant believes her son is looking down on her and is proud.

"He loved to give me hugs. He'd say mom I love you.  He'd always say it with a big smile, and say I am so proud you are my mom," said Wiant.
