The Bellbrook Eagles are shooting to win more than just baskets.
Organizers of "Shooting for a Cure" are hoping for a full house this Friday night, November 20, as the Bellbrook Eagles girls basketball team takes on Kenton Ridge.
It is a special game to honor those who have died of breast cancer and to also join the fight for a cure.
Coach Jason Tincher and his team will be playing in honor of Gayle Joyner who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2003.
Jeff Joyner said his wife left behind their son Rob, and daughter, Katie, a former Bellbrook basketball player.
" It is a real honor to our family they are playing in memory of her." Joyner said.
At the game on Friday, the team will be selling "Shooting for a Cure" pink t-shirts for ten dollars. All the proceeds go the Susan G.Komen Foundation to raise awareness and help find a cure for breast cancer. Joyner said he has been overwhelmed with all the support.
"This administration the girls basketball team, Coach Tincher, they are all supporting breast cancer awareness. I think its wonderful, I can't thank them enough. "
Also joining in the cause, is Dayton author Stephanie Zonars.
"It is extremely meaningful, when you meet the Joyner family. Losing a mom and a wife to breast cancer, it becomes much more real ." She said.
Zonars wrote "Leader of the Pack" a book about legendary NC state basketball coach Kay Yow, who also died of breast cancer, earlier this year. Zonars will signing copies of her book at Friday nights game.
The game is this Friday, November 20 at Bellbrook Middle School.
JV starts at 6:00 p.m., Varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
