Oakwood Officer faces assault charges

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - An Oakwood police officer has been charged with assault.

John McCalister was caught on camera October 14, 2009 punching a panhandler at the Rite Aid in the 1100 block of Wilmington Avenue. McCalister was not on duty at the time.

McCalister is a 14 year veteran of the Oakwood public safety department, where he currently worked on patrol.

Before being hired in Oakwood, McCalister spent ten years as a firefighter in Dayton where he was once named firefighter of the year.

During a psychological exam, McCalister admitted having a temper, but said he never had trouble controlling it.

McCalister has no criminal history.
