Crews called to apartment fire

KETTERING (WDTN) - Kettering firefighters say an electrical problem may have sparked flames at an apartment complex Saturday evening.

Firefighters were called after a resident smelled smoke in the Heritage Knoll apartments off East Whipp road.

Firefighters found flames in the attic and were able to knock them down quickly..

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The apartment complex managers say they will put the displaced family up in a hotel as they survey the damage.

Firefighters caution residents to be smart if you're using electric heaters to warm up your homes. Here are some basic safety tips:

-Choose models that have automatic safety switches that turn off the unit if it tips over accidentally.

-Check the cord. If it is frayed, worn or broken, do not use it. Putting tape on the cord does not fix the problem.

-Never use an extension cord with a portable heater.

-Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from curtains, newspapers or anything that might burn.

Firefighters say it is also a good idea to turn the heater off before you leave the house or go to bed.
