INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White says his attorney mishandled his defense, leading to the conviction that forced him from office.
The assertion is among several in a petition filed Thursday in Hamilton County seeking to have White's trial judge vacate his convictions on three counts of voter fraud and three other counts.
White says his attorney — former Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi — did a poor job representing him because he didn't offer a defense at his trial.
He also says he was convicted for voting outside the district where he lived even though other elected officials have done the same thing without being prosecuted.
White was sentenced last year to one year on home detention
Brizzi says he has no immediate comment on White's petition.
