TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A western Indiana county has rejected its coroner's request for a salary increase she argued would boost her pay to the level of several other county office holders.
The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/10MaoOS ) Vigo County Coroner Susan Amos sought to increase her salary 50 percent to nearly $48,000. She currently earns about $32,000. The higher salary would have matched those of the county auditor, clerk and treasurer among other county officials.
But the County Council unanimously denied her request Tuesday. A council committee said last month that it looked at salaries of other coroners in counties of similar size to come up with a base amount that determined the coroner's current salary.
But Amos says the average salary for coroners in Indiana is about $42,000.
