TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is planning to hold the first of 10 public hearings to get public input on how to implement a new area code in southern Indiana.
The IURC must decide whether to divide the 812 area code into two geographic areas or to create an overlay inside the 812 area code where new phones would get the new area code. The IURC says the overlay method has been the most commonly used option for area code relief since 2005. The geographic split method was the most commonly used option before that.
The 812 telephone area code is running low on available numbers.
The hearing in Terre Haute is scheduled for March 4. A final decision by the IURC is expected by the end of the year.
