INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police say a student who reported seeing a man with a gun at a downtown Indianapolis university campus did not actually see the man carrying a gun.
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Police Capt. Bill Abston tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/Y5ASuc ) the student was in a campus parking lot about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when she saw a man in a long brown coat with a gun in the trunk of his car.
Abston says the woman told officers she ducked and lost sight of the man.
Campus police issued an alert and ordered a campus lockdown for four hours Tuesday as police searched for the man.
Abston says police were dealing with unknowns and their response to the reported gunman was appropriate.
