Officials: Indiana spring means volatile weather

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Weather Service, Indiana State Police and other state agencies are reminding people that spring brings volatile weather that can increase the risk of flooding and they should make sure they're prepared.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security encourages state residents to have a family emergency communications plan and to prepare a disaster preparedness kit that contains essential items a family needs to sustain itself for at least three days.

The weather service says most flood-related deaths occur while driving. State police say drivers should not drive around barricades at water crossings and should never attempt to cross a flooded road, even if it appears shallow.

Officials also say purchasing flood insurance is a cost-effective step homeowners can take to protect their homes.
