Indy pet store raid finds hundreds of dead animals

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis pet store where hundreds of dead fish, lizards and other animals were found in filthy tanks and cages could face fines of more than $1 million.
Animal control officials removed animals from the Fish Bowl Pet Center Thursday after the owner failed to address violations following a failed inspection last week.
Crews found animals inside cramped, feces-filled cages or floating in tanks. Two live puppies and dozens of birds were confiscated.
The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/13XK6tp ) the shop was cited for 581 care and treatment violations. Each carries a maximum $2,500 fine. That means owner Bill Houston could have to pay more than $1.4 million.
The store opened 45 years ago. Houston's license to operate the business has been suspended.
