Indy man gets 105 years in grandfather's slaying

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — An Indianapolis man who pleaded guilty in the fatal stabbing of his disabled 84-year-old grandfather has been sentenced to 105 years in prison.

Thirty-nine-year-old Richard Fouts was sentenced Monday in Tippecanoe Circuit Court in William Hartlep's October 2011 killing. He had pleaded guilty to murder, burglary and habitual offender charges in the slaying.

Police said Fouts tied up his grandfather with duct tape in his Lafayette home, slashed his throat with a knife and strangled him with an extension cord because Hartlep had no money to give him.

The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/XQ7XY2 ) three relatives testified Monday about their disbelief and anger over the killing of Hartlep, a World War II veteran who got around on a motorized scooter and regularly waved to neighbors from his front porch.
