INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana legislators have approved a proposal overhauling the state's specialty auto license plate system that requires all the groups with plates to sell 500 a year and undergo a financial review once a decade.

State senators voted 48-0 Tuesday in favor the plan that the House previously approved.

The bill would create an eight-member bipartisan commission to review requests from nonprofits and universities seeking specialty plates. The panel would also check reports about how the groups are spending their proceeds from the plates.

The bill sets a limit of 150 specialty plates. Indiana now has about 100.

A similar push was derailed a year ago by conservatives who sought to revoke the plate issued to a gay youth advocacy group.
