ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Demolition of a massive, old industrial building in northern Indiana is under way.
The Old Water Piano building in Elkhart was originally built in 1889 and has been home to an auto manufacturing facility, a discount store and a piano maker over the years. The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/13XYPVl) the building has been vacant since 1995.
The city of Elkhart acquired the building last year and decided to tear it down because it became a safety concern. The demolition should be completed by early April.
Future use of the 3.2-acre property hasn't yet been determined and city officials are looking for ideas.
So far, about 80 percent of the demolition has been completed. Old bricks, concrete and steel from the building are being recycled.
