Guilty verdict in Wright State stabbing

Du pleaded guilty to ex-girlfriend's stabbing

GREENE COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) - A Greene County jury convicted a man of a 1997 stabbing at Wright State University Thursday.

2News broke the story on WDTN.com and had the only camera in the courtroom as jurors handed down the verdict.

The jury had the case for just three and a half hours before convicting Chi Du of the attempted murder of Eric Borton.

Going to trial was an unusual move by Du's attorney because he pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend Thuy Mai earlier this week.

The charges stem from a stabbing back in 1997.

Du attacked Mai and her friend Eric Borton as they were leaving the library at Wright State University.

Both were stabbed multiple times and slashed with a butcher knife.

Du was on the run for 12 years, but was found in Toronto in 2008.

As he finally faced justice this week, his attorney contended that Du admitted to the pre-meditated attack on Mai, but not Borton because he never intended to attack Borton.

He says Du only turned on Borton when he tried to defend Mai.

Both victims testified in the trial and described the violent attack.

Greene County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, David Hayes said, "Most of the credit goes to them. They had the resiliency to survive the attack, and then they had the courage to come here and confront him all these years later. So, we had great confidence in them."

Du's attorney, Jay Adams said, "We're obviously disappointed. But, we plan on appealing the decision, and I think we have good grounds to do that."

Du faces twenty years in prison for both charges combined.

He will be sentenced Friday, March 26th.
