DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -
The Ohio Department of Transportation announced it will be the first agency in the country to use green strobe lights on snowplow trucks this upcoming winter.
While the official start of winter is months away, ODOT has already begun readying its snow-fighting equipment and its 3,000 snowplow drivers for the upcoming snow and ice season.
Starting on October 9 in Mercer County, ODOT District 7 will conduct 150-point inspections, test, and fine-tune snow removal equipment as part of county-by-county Operational Readiness events.
New this year, ODOT will battle rear-end crashes as well as snow and ice thanks to the addition of green and white strobe lights to its existing amber lights. The color combination has been proven more visible than amber lights alone.
